I am not very satisfied with the officiating of late. It has nothing to do with wins and losses with WC or anyone that I care about. It has everything to do with consistency. Out of bounds calls seem arbitrary at best. Officials seem very lazy to get to the mat to see the pin, it often happens before they get down there! I absolutely hate the takedown rule, if you shoot and drop a guy on his butt, he's down! All this sticky ankle grabbing and waist hugging is for the birds. call a 2 and begin counting back points. That will get "defense boy" wrestling. Lastly, stalling. Call it early and often. It is pointless to call it with 20 seconds left for the first time. Stalling is equal to a holding cal in the nfl. you can call it if you want, almost whenever it seems. And setting legs shouldn't be absolution from stalling.
Feedback...?

On your butt isn't a takedown b/c by rule you must have 3 supporting points on the mat. That is why you will see it called as soon as the defensive wrestler puts a hand back. Also if you have a guy on his rear but you only have a high crotch you are in no way in control and against a good wrestler you are probably in trouble. I have noticed refs not getting down as quickly but remember they are human and they are up and down all day. It can wear on a person. Stalling was, is, and will always be the toughest call. I can count on one hand the number of times that I saw stalling called and disagreed. Once a ref calls it, it's been obvious for some time. I can say though that Winchester probably has the best refs top to bottom. Blue Ridge is the worst.

Winchester area refs are clearly the best. Saw some screwy stuff in the panhandle of WV. Some weird reffing in PA, but mostly good. But I disagree with the idea of the three point on takedowns. Your ass is on the mat! Get busy!

one more thing. The rule of the takedown is exactly what I am complaining about. change it! I don't think the scrappy ankle picker is helping the sport. Get busy with real wrestling! One other thing, I will expound on the stalling rule. If you are not turning or escaping, bingo...you're it!

Refs are refs. Some are horrible and some are great. That decision is usually reserved until you see whether your kid wins or loses. As long as they are consistent with their calls, you just have to accept that they are human and not perfect. I have seen a few that lean too heavily in one direction or another at times and that can be discouraging, but very few of the thousands of matches I have watched have been decided by the ref. Most of the time, the kids on the mat actually decide who wins.

wc,
What do you mean by "scrappy ankle-picker"? Do you mean the thing Sanderson is famous for or something else?

I like that, it should illegal to grab your opponent's ankle in any position.
We should also outlaw: Funk Leg Rides Crab Ride Tilts Granby Peterson and Super Duck

ha ha. I am talking about when a double is achieved a defensive wrestler is virtually on their back and because they grab an ankle or double arm the waist, the ref doesn't call it a take down. I think the college rules are not as kind to the defensive wrestler. Anyway, it is a great way to stall and kill the clock. Especially when the ref takes forever to call a stalemate. Just wait for the aggressive wrestler who is behind to shoot, and then just sit on your butt double clutching his waist. Sure makes the sport enjoyable to watch...

or they can learn how to finish a takedown. Good technique is more enjoyable to watch than an aggressive kid that doesn't know how to finish a takedown. Now, an aggressive kid with skills usually ends up at the top of the podium and is far more "enjoyable" to watch...

Sitting on your ass doubling up around the waste or grabbing an ankle is no worse/no better than shooting a single, laying on your belly with a leg in hand and doing nothing. I have seen stalemate called at the drop of a hat when a kid was working up from a double and thought he was robbed. I have also seen stalls go on forever and not get called. Just be consistent.

guest2, this is a discussion board. Rules change in sports all the time. So your lame two solutions are, apparently, a reflection of your own character. These discussions are where ideas arise to make sports more competitive and enjoyable to watch. Those are the objectives of sports. I do think that wrestling is the most indicative sport of one's skills, and that if you are the better wrestler, you will win. But there is such a thing as a close match. Thousands and thousands per year! And many questionable calls determine the outcome. I am mainly calling for consistency in calls. I know they are human. But I feel they can do better.

Good retort WC126. I think that is what we all want is consistency. We want to watch our kids get a fair shake and not have a match decided by a bad call. It happens. It has happened. It will happen again. I think there are a few refs that should have quit a long time ago, but they are still here and they continue to make some really bad calls. Most of those bad calls are recorded by coaches and parents. But, there seems to be little done to either make sure they dont repeat or they are corrected in the future. Because, nobody wants a ref to be "against" their kid or their team.

It is great to hear a little feedback rather than the usual punking that goes on on this mb. I sure hope the refs are thick skinned enough to deal with criticism of their work. Everyone that works has to deal with that...and most of the refs are pretty mature looking. I am mainly just looking for more activity on the mat, and if a guy dives to the line to avoid a td, call it a td. Guest2...you're a knuckle-head.

... So what you're saying is that you want the sport to be devolved To just doubles with little to no defense and switched and stand ups from bottom and just halves on top? People have been wrestling for millennium the same way. You can't just take away the ability to grab an ankle. You might as well just stick to watching greco roman there bro

I think though that the position isn't advantageous enough to award points. If kids weren't lazy there it would typically go to a scramble.

I have a different take on the stalling calls. There seems to be a lot of stall calls on guys simply because they are winning. If you score 3 takedowns the first 2 periods and are holding you ground, then it should be the guy behind in points pushing to score. I also have a problem with stall calls on wrestlers riding hard on top. If you are losing, then it is your job to get out. As long as the guy on top keeps working, there should be no stall calls. Make the guy losing earn his points.
