What are the rules about what a wrestler needs to do to make a certain weight for the district tournament? Here's my specific question: If a guy wrestles most of the season at 112, what does he need to do to be able to wrestle in the tournament at 103? Does he have to weight 103, even now, in a match? Or could he weight 104, given the extra pound allowed? And are there rules on the types of matches he has to wrestle, like a district match? Are matches against private schools counted?

Starting in 2006-07, wrestlers may not lose more than 1.5 percent of their weight per week and must maintain body fat of at least 7 percent for boys and 12 percent for girls. Also, their weight-loss plans must be monitored weekly by the schools. Also, you must make scratch weight (the actual weight class, in this case 103, even after the extra allowance, it MUST be a weigh-in at 103 or less) and wrestle at that weight at least once in an official varsity match. I would think that against a private school would be fine, as long as it is an official, scheduled varsity match. And, be very careful with the 1.5 percent, as this has caused wrestlers to be disqualified in the very recent past and unable to participate in the post season. Hope this helps.

Yes you can weigh 104 , because of 1 pound in Jan. You must wrestle 1 district match in the 103 weight class.

Maybe someone could just point me to the rules. The answers in here conflict and I've heard the same thing when talking to people. I get conflicts on whether the extra pound is allowed because of the extra month and whether it has to be a match in a certain cicumstance like district vs. doesn't matter.

In order to wrestle any weight class post season, you must weigh in at that weight class, SCRATCH weight, which is the ACTUAL weight with NO allowance, and wrestle a sanctioned match. Yes, you get an extra pound in January, and another in February, but you do NOT get those pounds as far as weighing in at scratch weight. If you wanna wrestle 103 post season, you must weigh in one time, at 103 pounds, and wrestle a match there or one above, period. No ifs, ands, or buts. As stated in the rules: "The growth allowance cannot be used to allow a wrestler to reach a lower weight class than permitted without a growth allowance. The original weight class weight must be greater than or equal to the athlete’s minimum weight permitted."
